Word Study is up and running! Each student was assessed and given a group of words for the week. We sorted them in class and talked about patterns we found in the words- short a, double consonant, etc. All students were told to keep them in their blue reading folder and on Friday they will be assessed on those words. We will be doing word work during the week but it would be most beneficial if students were studying the words at home as well. Below is the philosophy behind word study and some activities you can be doing at home with your child. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Word study is an approach to spelling instruction that moves away from a focus on memorization. It is based on learning word patterns rather than memorizing unconnected words.
Word Sort– sort the word (long a and short a) (double consonants with ‘ed vs. single consonant with ‘ed
Find the word- look for word study words in your books while reading. Make a list and check a word every time you find it!
Sentences– write sentences using your words
Create a story– make up a story using at least 5 of your word study words
