Summer Learning Fun

Hi Families!  I hope you are having a great summer and I am so looking forward to meeting all of you for a great 2nd grade year.  These months, please make sure to read, read, read.  The Chicago Public Library has a great summer reading program that is all about Earth.  They have science experiments and recommended reading as well as prizes to keep kids motivated.

Real world applications of telling time, counting money, counting and adding items in the grocery store are great ways to keep kids engaged in math while prepping them for 2nd grade math.

The library also has passes that can be checked out for museums this summer and offers chess classes and tournaments.

Week of June 11th

It is our last full week of school!  This week we will continue reviewing concepts in reading and math.  In science we will continue studying our silk worms- hoping they make a chrysalis soon!  We will also keep gardening and looking at pollinators.  In social studies we are mapping out everywhere we went for our passport series.  For writing we are working on personal narratives- adding detail and dialogue.

Students will be expected to complete math homework this week only.  Please be looking for any classroom or Ray school library books at home as I will be collecting all week.

Week of June 4th!

Happy June 214 Families!  We have lots of fun things to do these next two weeks as we wrap up the year.  June 7th we will participate in Field Day.  Friday, June 8th, will be Rockfest and the students will perform a song from the Lion King.  We will also get a class pizza party for winning the walk-a-thon.

As the year is winding down I will start asking students to return books to the classroom library so if you see any books at home please send them along.

In the classroom…

Reading Workshop:  We will be reading Mercy Watson and practicing all of the skills we have learned this year.  I will be continuing guided reading but also doing F&P assessments to see where the kids are at the end of the year with their reading level.

Writing Workshop:  We are going to write personal narratives about our year and also finish up our Haikus.  Thank you to Flynns for providing us with such great poetry books.  This will be the last week for spelling words.

Math:  For the next two weeks we are going to be reviewing 2nd grade skills while also practicing multiplication and area and perimeter.

Science:  We are working on our garden and observing our insects.  We are also studying parts of flowers and understanding the process of pollination and who are pollinators.

Social Studies:  We learned about Bangladesh last week from Ms. Rokea and Mr. Flynn came in to help us with chess.  We will continue to play and practice map skills.
