May 29th

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day Weekend!  This week is filled-  On Wednesday and Thursday we will take our final NWEA test.  On Friday students who want to audition for the talent show need to be prepared to perform for me.  Only 3 acts per class are able to go on to the whole school talent show.

In class this week….

Math:  We have been doing a lot of review.  We will continue to review this week but will only have a few days of math due to the NWEA and memorial day.  We have started learning about perimeter and area and capacity.

Reading Workshop:  We have been reading Nonfiction texts and practicing main idea and details with books about plants and insects.  Next week we will look at cause and effect and then return to fiction books again.

Writing Workshop:  This week we wrote haikus!  The syllables were a challenge at first but then everyone got the pattern which was great.  We also worked a lot with personification and alliteration.  On Friday we made posters with examples of literary language.  Next week we will wrap up poetry and return to personal narratives.

Science:  We studied parts of a flower and looked at different types of pollinators.  We checked in with our garden and observed our silkworms that grow so fast!

Social Studies:  Next week we will have a presentation about Iraq and continue practicing chess!

Writing Workshop:  We are publishing our poems!  We will continue working on literary language and then transition back to personal narratives to wrap up the year.

Social Studies:  We do not have any passport presentations for this week so if you or anyone you know would like to come in and present please let me know. We will continue working on chess and our map skills.

Science:  We have been observing our silkworms behavior and are now waiting for them to produce silk.  Hopefully it will happen before the end of the year!  We are also studying the life cycle of plants.

What is happening in class this week…

Math:  We will wrap up Unit 9 this week and test on Friday.  Students did an end of the year 2nd grade practice test today so I can see what skills they still need practice with.  We are also doing math facts test for addition/subtraction/and multiplication.

Reading:  We wrapped up our series book clubs.  Next week students will choose one book to a complete a book report on- they will need to think about literary language, the lesson, story elements, and summary.

Writing: This last week we looked at three different poem structures- list, conversation, and story.  We also talked a lot about how to pull a metaphor through a whole poem and how to convey feeling. We hope you like the poems the kids took home on Friday!

Social Studies:  This past week we had an excellent presentation on Egypt.  We played chess with Mr. Flynn and made an “anywhere” garden and discussed the importance of planting in a home and neighborhood.

Science:  Our silk worms hatched!  We learned that they LOVE mulberry leaves.  A bunch of our mealworms changed from the pupa stage to a darkling beetle adult.  We will listened to fantastic presentations about insects from students and gardened!  Next week we will dig deeper into silkworms and plants.
