February 26th

Hi 214 Families!  Please find the weeks objectives/plans below!

Reading Workshop: After having a lot of fun finding literary language, we have moved on to learning about inference.  Students are using schema (what they know) + text clues to make inferences about what they are reading.  Students are practicing speaking and writing with the prompt ” I can infer______ because______”. To push themselves and to get 4 star post-its (we will create a rubric this week) they will include ” In the text it says….” and include text evidence.  We will circle back to literary language again- the kids are still finding lots of examples in their texts and having the most fun with onomatopoeia (of course!).

Writing Workshop: The kids wrote fantastic opinion pieces about various Civil Rights Leaders we learned about in Social Studies.  We have returned to writing about our favorite books and will continue learning about opinion writing for the next month.  Students will be challenged to find different ways to support their opinions and gather strong evidence.

They will receive new spelling words on Monday!

Math:  We will have a math review for Unit 6 tomorrow and take the test on Tuesday.  We will begin Unit 7 on Wednesday!

Social Studies:  We will wrap up our unit on the Harlem Renaissance and Civil Rights Leaders this week and will begin our unit on Women’s History Month on Thursday (for march)!

Science:  We had quite the experience making ooblek!  Kids were challenged with trying to figure out what makes something a non-newtonian fluid.  We will discuss it in greater detail this week.

February 20th

Hi 214 Families!  I hope that you have had a nice 3 day weekend.  Wednesday is the Black History Month Assembly- thank you to Betty’s mom Ann for helping us with our art projects!

Please let me know if you have not been added to our class list email chain and we will make sure to get you on there.  We have been sending spelling words in case any child forgets them at school and needs to study ..amongst other news!

What is happening this week…

Reading Workshop– we will continue our study of literary language.  We have been studying poetry by Langston Hughes and analyzing the comparisons in his writing.  Kids have also been looking for examples of literary language in their own books.

Writing Workshop– we have been practicing opinion writing and will be publishing writing pieces this week about civil rights leaders we have studied.  Kids are working on finding evidence that supports their opinion and starting to write in paragraphs.

Math- We have been practicing partial sums addition and will continue studying adding and subtracting with two and three digit numbers.

Social Studies– We will continue our study of civil rights leaders and also art that came from the Harlem Renaissance.  We have been learning how the artists that came from that time period helped inspire the civil rights movement.  Last week kids seemed to be especially interested in learning about Ida B. Wells and learning that she lived right down the street!

Science– last week we made slime with the preK and needed to answer the question- is Slime a liquid or solid?!  Stay tuned for Ooblek and more investigation into non-newtonian fluids!

Week of February 12th

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and the kids were able to have some fun in all of the snow.  This week we will have a Valentines Day party on Wednesday.  If your child is bringing in valentines, please make sure they bring one in for everyone.  Also, it is preferred if snacks are a bit on the healthier side… all treats for valentines can head home with the kids at the end of the day!

We will also celebrate the 100th day of school this week and please mark the 21st for a Black History Month Assembly in the evening!

What is happening this week…

Reading Workshop:   Please make sure your child is reading at home for at least 20 minutes and that the book is not too hard.  We have talked a lot about fluency and pacing so kids should be thinking about how there voice sounds when they read it out loud- is it choppy or smooth?  Do they read with emotion when characters speak?  Do they get the mood of the story and does their tone of voice match it?  We also discussed that when we read too fast, we may forget the story.  If we read too slow we might not be able to comprehend everything so it is really important that we are reading at ‘just right’ pace and we can retell what has happened in the story.  This week we will be studying literary elements.

Writing Workshop:  We are working on opinion writing.  We have been writing letters, expressing opinions about our favorite books.  This week we will work on including strong reasons and evidence.  We will also talk about when to make a new paragraph.  Due to missing school on Friday, we will take our spelling test on Friday.

Math:  We are continuing with unit 6!  We have been practicing using different diagrams to model number sentences.

Science:  We will continue our investigation of solids and liquids and how they interact.  Last week we observed how small and large solids function when being put in different canisters and given different movements.

Social Studies:  Last week we learned about the contributions and heroism of Rosa Parks and Thurgood Marshall while making our Civil Rights Encyclopedias.  This week we will learn about Ida B. Wells and John Lewis.

Week of February 5th

Hi 214 Families!  We have started a class email with the help of Ned’s mom, Erin!  Thank you for your help!  If you have not been added to the list please let me know and we will add you right away.  I feel like this is a good way to have an extra line of communication for extra things going on.

What is happening this week…

Reading Workshop:  This past week we worked fluency.  We thought about dialogue tags, mood, and pacing and practiced rereading in our heads and reading with the characters voice in mind. This week we will work on reading at a just right pace and explore literary language.

Math:  We wrapped up Unit 5 last week and will begin Unit 6.  This week we will practice representing data, comparing number story, and interpreting number stories.

Writing Workshop: We have started our unit on Opinion writing.  This past week we started writing letters about our favorite books.  We included information about our favorite character, part, and big ideas.  This week we will work with partners to retell our books to make our letters better and include text evidence.  We will also write with our audience in mind and use a checklist.

Science:  This week we will study solid materials ad notice the behavior of solid materials in various settings.  We will combine and separate solid materials of different particle sizes.  We will also compare the behavior of solids and liquids in similar settings.

Social Studies:  Last week we started an Encyclopedia of the Civil Rights Movement.  We began by learning about  Ruby Bridges and this week will study Rosa Parks and Thurgood Marshall.
